What is SOAR Tutoring?
SOAR Tutoring is a program of Eagle Sports Club that offers low-cost,
individualized one-on-one reading tutoring to struggling students on Detroit’s
east side.
Now in our fifth year, SOAR Tutoring has shown remarkable results, with
students’ average reading improvement increasing over 2 levels each
year.
But we couldn’t do this without a committed team of dedicated volunteers
to work with our students. That’s why we need YOU!
We prepare the lessons, you follow the step-by-step process...and our
students’ reading improves. Would you consider committing one hour
a week to sit and read with a struggling student?
Here's How . . .
Once a week for an hour you are scheduled to work with a student. You
arrive, grab the student’s lesson folder, glance at the activities and
greet the student.
Each session combines reading, writing, vocabulary review and a skills
activity tailored to meet the student’s individual needs.
The process is simple and mentor-friendly. You focus on modeling and encouraging
your student using the materials provided.

Few Details
• All mentors are required to attend a 90 minute training before
they
begin working with a student. Training sessions will be at
Grace
Community Church beginning in August. Select your session

• Tutoring runs from the end of September until early May.
• One hour tutoring sessions at 4:30 and 5:30 PM,
Monday through Thursday.
• Location: Grace Community Church, at the
corner of Moross Road and I-94.
